How many times should I wash my baby’s/child’s hair?

A baby’s/child’s hair should not be washed more than once a week. The reason is because the African hair texture, commonly known as afro hair, does not produce as much oil, and therefore tends to get dry easily. Over washing can strip away the natural oils of the scalp and leave the hair dry, brittle and frizzy.

When should I start using hair products on my child’s hair?

For products such as Muna & Luchi Hair care products, that are made with plant based organic ingredients, you can start as early as you are comfortable with, say from two months. However, it is important to do a patch test prior to using and also start with gentle products such as hair butter melt and leave-in conditioner.

Is coconut oil and/or shea butter not enough for keeping baby's/child’s hair moisturized?

No they are not and the reason is because they are both oils and not moisturizers. Moisturizers are creamy conditioners that can be applied to the hair without need for rinsing out. You need a combination of water, moisturizer and oil/butter to keep your little one’s hair moisturized.

My baby was born with a full head of hair but now everything has fallen off, what do I do?

It is important to know that most babies lose their birth hair within the first year. So you need to verify that this hair loss is not biological because if it is, there is nothing you can do about it and there is actually a great chance that your little one will sport a full head of hair by the second birthday. However if you have verified that the hair loss is the result of poor hair care methods, you can just begin to care for the hair a lot better. Invest in quality products and learn how to give your little one a scalp massage using coconut oil or any other oils of your choice. Scalp massages are great because they stimulate the hair follicles and encourage restorative hair growth.

At what age do I start styling my baby’s hair?

Because a baby’s scalp is very tender, it is very imperative that you don’t put it in styles that could be a source of tension which will result in serious hair damage. It is best to always leave your baby’s hair in a simple fro especially at infancy. There is no specific age to start styling your baby’s hair, but if you notice that your baby’s hair is getting too long to be left in a fro, you can begin to put it in single strand twists or braids.

My baby will soon be one, what style should I do for her first birthday?

For babies under the age of 3, it is important to choose styles that will ensure they look nice throughout their birthday. In this case you can put her hair in two, three or even four bunches of puffs, and then you can decorate with colourful hair pins. With this style, you can rest assured that your baby will not be pulling or tugging on her hair and that she still looks nice and neat by the end of the day. If her hair is not long enough to be put in four puffs, then simply decorate with a hair accessory.

What hair care tips are good for baby boys?

Same tips apply for both boys and girls.

Why is my baby’s hair bald at the back of his/her head?

This is called infant balding which is a result of the harsh materials where your baby usually places his/her head. For example, cotton pillowcases, the harsh material of the car seat and bouncer etc. These suck up the moisture in the back areas of your child’s head and expose the hair to dryness and breakage. To prevent this, you need to get satin head rests which will provide the delicate material that will not cause dryness for your baby’s hair. Check our satin product collections to see our Bald Lince Busters specially created to prevent the dryness and badlines at the back of your baby’s head.

Must I cut my baby’s hair when she turns one?

You don’t need to cut your baby’s hair when he/she turns one, because the belief upon which the common practice is a myth. Recent hair science has dispelled the myth which says that if an infant’s hair is cut at one year, the hair grows out a lot better. Therefore there is no need to cut your baby’s hair when he/she turns one.

Why is my baby/child’s hair dry?

There are a number of things that could contribute to dry hair in children. The first is excessive washing. The second is inadequate intake of fluids. Then finally insufficient conditioning treatments in the form of daily moisturizing, regular conditioner washing and deep conditioning treatments.
