How To Prep Your Child’s Natural Hair For A Twist-Out Or Braid-Out Style

I often get a lot of questions regarding how to style a child’s natural hair for a special occasion, such as first birthdays, school parties, weddings etc. It can be tough to decide how to style your toddlers hair in such a way that it stays as pretty and as neat as possible throughout the day. In this post I will give you the 5 Steps I follow to style my child’s hair. I have also selected my top 6 six styles from Muna’s style dairy and I hope you find one that suits your little one. So if it is your baby’s first birthday and you are wondering how to ensure her hair looks amazing for her first birthday, below are somethings you can do to make her hair styling process a breeze:

1. Prep her hair a week before the day

Do not wait for her actual birthdate to wash and condition her hair, you can do this a week before. Wash her hair and deep condition it at least seven days ahead of time and put it in a protective style such as single braid or single two strand twists. This will ensure you get her hair stretched and also you get lovely ringlets in form of a braid out or twist out depending on which protective style you choose to do. Remember not to use extensions for the protective styles, not even the one they call baby wool!

2. Take down her hair with your fingers

In order to get those beautiful, curly ringlets we talked about in the previous point, you would want to take down her hair without a comb or a toothpick, use only your fingers. To encourage slip and make the process easier, you can dip your fingers in coconut oil or some leave in conditioner before you begin and do this one section at a time.

3.  Photo-shoot vs Actual Birthday

If you plan to do a photo-shoot prior to the birthday, you could choose “fro based” styles for it, while or the actual birthday, you could choose “puff based” styles. Fro based styles are styles that are not held by ponytail holders, so they are likely to get messy easily, you can see examples on the right panel of the picture. So for example, you can choose a fro hawk (bottom right) for a photo-shoot because it is more controlled environment as you are present with her in the room. On the other hand, puff based styles, have their parts held together with ponytail holders and are less likely to get messy easily. You can see examples on the left panel, these styles are great for parties, so while your baby plays and is having fun with her toddler friends, you are assured her hair will still be looking nice for a long period of time.

4. Use a good amount of hair moisturizer

To achieve sleek styles, you need to use a good amount of hair moisturizers or leave in conditioners, because they will ensure your baby’s hair is soft and bouncy, ready to be styled. Remember you will need to keep her hair moisturized daily, even before her birthday for best results. If you notice your baby’s hair is a bit rough even after applying the moisturiser, you could use a gel, like Eco styler gel to sleek it down.

5. Some tools you will need

To achieve great slick and well parted styles, you will need, a wide tooth comb, a rat tail comb, some pony tail holders, bobby pins, soft hair brush and a gadget (to keep your baby distracted while you style).
